Artist Statement

For this project, we took 0.5 photos of ourselves and then grid-marked them on the printed paper. Then we translated the image scale up by drawing a proportional, larger grid pattern on canvas and filled in the outlines with charcoal sticks. Through this process, I tried my best to put emphasis on shadow work, mapping out the different shades and where they were more or less pronounced to create a 3-D effect. I also added in various small details to contrast with the subtle nuances of the charcoal shading, like the white seams on my jacket and the dark shadow of my pockets. As my arm took up most of the visual weight in my drawing, I had some more trouble with trying to draw out my facial features in the smaller amount of squares.
