Artist Statement

For this furniture design, I wanted to break away from the perfection of straight, 90 degree angle furniture, to create something that felt disordered and fluid. I also wanted to create something that could be used for different purposes, expanding that fluidity into functionality.  For the design, I was inspired by the layered composition of ocean waves. I incorporated that element through the rounded curves and holes cut out in varying shapes and sizes on each wooden plank. As each slice revealed a different contour, the assembly of all the pieces unveiled formations that resembled geological strata and layers that resembled overlapping waves. Lastly, the dimensions of the furniture allows it to be used as both a bench and a coffee table.
