Artist Statement
The sense of touch can build connections that transcends hearing a voice or seeing a face. The concept behind my jewelry design is that reminder of connection - how we extend ourselves towards others or how we seem to be reaching for something. In the pieces I've designed, I incorporate a hand, a strong symbol of touch. Hands hold, reach, and embrace, carrying deep emotional resonance. For my three designs, each piece demonstrates that concept; holding, reaching, and embracing.
For the ring I have modeled and renderd, a pair of hands curve around the finger, symbolizing a hug. The hands wrap around the finger in a way that feels personal and even protective. The piece symbolizes connection through touch in the form of an embrace. The design also carries a playful sense. The surreal idea of a miniature hand hugging the finger makes the piece both thought-provoking and whimsical. To wear the ring is to carry a hug, a reminder of the connection that comes with touch.
My jewelry designs also hae a strong surrealist influence. They feel strange in scale and context as the hands are miniaturized and transformed into jewelry. Ultimately, the surreal aspect of the design pushes it to become a wearable object, a paradox that is whimsical, yet human.
Process:
The design was created in Rhino, where the hands took a lot of time and details to create the ridges and bumps found on an actual hand.
