Artist Statement

The inspiration for this ring comes from my childhood memories, spending time with my family during the bustling and lively days of Chinese New Year. I remember always having a Sakura Tree in the dining room as a child, and I remember the floral scent that perfumed the room with its delicate pink petals. Thus, I tried to draw from my culture in this ring and incorporated it with the idea of family and belonging, where I deeply value and showcase my family traditions. I first started with sketches of branches from the memories of admiring the branches of the sakura tree, and came up with the idea to have them wrap around the finger as a ring, almost like a hug you would receive from family and loved ones. I then brought this into Rhino and modeled it using sub-d organic forms, experimenting with different ways it could wind and bend. Finally, I had it made into a silver ring as a gift back to my family, reciprocating their love for me and representing the cherished memories I had as child.
