Artist Statement
My sister is my other half, growing up travelling has meant that every few years I move away from all my friends, but I’ve always had Ruby. Being twins means that I see her more than even my other family members because I see her at home, at school, and with our friends. I am always around her and I wanted to make a piece for her to demonstrate this.
What I struggled with was figuring out how I wanted to make this piece and that resulted in my putting off starting it for months. My initial plan was to do it digitally but as I got around to doing that I’d worried I’d already done too many pieces digitally. I debated how I wanted to do this in class and one of my friends asked why I didn’t just do it on a mirror, and by coincidence our art room had a mirror that hadn’t been touched in years. Doing it on a mirror added another layer of intimacy to it because her being my reflection means that this piece is specific to me, the only way to accurately look at this piece is to look at it through my eyes as a reflection of myself.
