Artist Statement

This artwork reimagines the sea urchin as a soldier, symbolizing its defensive role in the ocean, while riding a crab instead of a traditional horse. Just as sea urchins deter predators with their spines, the soldier imagery reinforces their function as natural bodyguards, warding off threats for species like the carrier crab, which sometimes lifts urchins onto its back for protection. The transformation of the horse into a crab reflects the real-world symbiosis between these creatures, where the crab provides mobility while the urchin offers defense.
