Artist Statement

In this work, I wanted to explore the intricate mutualistic relationship between coral and zooxanthellae. Corals rely on zooxanthellae to gain nutrients, and in return, coral provides the algae with a protected environment. The gran, imposing human form represents the coral itself—an entity that appears strong and self-sufficient yet is deeply dependent on what resides within it. Just like how coral is built by tiny polyps that rely on its partner, the sculpture houses smaller figures within its hollow spaces, signifying an inner life that sustains the whole.
