Artist Statement

I wanted to attempt baking a sourdough bread, because I personally like eating it, and I’ve been seeing so many videos of sourdough recipes. I first approached this project with researching about sourdough: from the types of flour to the science behind fermentation. I made a feeding schedule for creating my sourdough starter, including the amount of flour and water needed everyday. I also made a table to log my process everyday and report on the changes/observations made. I also looked to creating a packaging design for it. (Also this became the emphasis because my sourdough starter died.) I drafted a design for a box that my sourdough was supposed to be placed in. My design was inspired by flowers, because sourdough tends to have floral scoring designs on its surface, so my box has 6 panels that open up to represent blooming. It's also in a hexagonal shape to keep that round form of sourdough. Lastly, I wanted to create a box because sourdough tends to be packaged in a bag and it makes it really inconvenient for eating/cutting. My design opens up and becomes a suitable flat surface for cutting/eating whenever.
