Artist Statement
"鐵窗" (iron window) refers to windows made from wrought iron or other metal materials, often featuring decorative elements. Today, these once intricate and commercialized structures have been labeled as "tacky" or even "ugly". In a way, this shows my relationship towards urban Taiwanese architecture. I use to view taipei as being an eyesore, but through my sustained investigation, I have seen them in a more pleasant and familiar light. In architecture from the 80s, these windows provide security while allowing light and ventilation. They are commonly adorned with intricate designs, including floral patterns and geometric shapes, reflecting the craftsmanship and cultural significance of the era. In modern contexts, "鐵窗" can also refer to protective grilles used in urban settings.
