Artist Statement

For the final project, I followed the theme of all my projects so far, and decided to design an entire auditorium. While our school auditorium is large, I would love to work in a more modern and expansive theater. I designed it based off my dream theater, which drew inspiration from Singapore American School's auditorium and Carnegie Mellon's theater. I also added my own details based off things I thought would be useful, such as adding more accessible entrances to the stage in front of the red curtain, adding extra storage space in an easily accessible room from the wings, and enough space below the stage for a trap room. This would make more show designs possible, such as having set pieces pop up out of the ground for quicker transitions or hold entire scenes in front of the red curtain while a scene is being set up. The auditorium also includes a balcony, at the top of which has the lighting and spotlight booth. I made sure to raise it high enough for spotlights to hit the edge of the stage. One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how high to raise each row. I borrowed a book from the technical director, which contained a formula calculating the optimal height to raise each row. After plugging in my numbers, it gave me a height increase of around 13 centimeters, which allowed for plenty of rows. If I had more time, I would go more in depth and design a lighting grid, with lots of modern lights, however my dreams outgrew my productivity.
