Artist Statement
Inspired by the traditional building materials used by indigenous communities in Taiwan, I decided to experiment with the forms that could be made from bamboo sticks. I constructed the model using intuition, adding sticks as I saw fit, mimicking how roots form in different directions in nature. During this process, I kept rotating the model to see which composition would fit best, and I decided that a more complex, shorter arrangement at the top would provide a nice contrast to the bottom, which has longer sticks. This piece overall showcases the multifaceted culture of Taiwan that I constantly try to gain inspiration from, which is the main part of my sustained investigation.
