Artist Statement
Aiden noticed that the ideas in the artist’s statement clearly show up throughout all the artworks, especially in how each piece explores cultural identity. He pointed out that the wide range of subject matter actually strengthens the artist’s main theme of dual heritage and belonging. By using both personal and cultural symbols, the artist communicates identity in a way that feels intentional and meaningful.
Aiden highlighted three specific examples of how the artist’s statement connects to the actual work. First, he talked about the accessories, like the rings and bracelets, and how they represent the artist’s two cultural backgrounds, Hong Kong and Taiwan. For instance, the “coin ring” includes traditional Taiwanese patterns that refer to national symbols and aesthetics. Meanwhile, the parador’s bracelet uses imagery from Hong Kong’s dim sum culture, featuring familiar foods like shrimp dumplings. These details not only show the artist’s bicultural identity but also celebrate everyday cultural objects tied to memory, family, and community.
When discussing the Bioluminescent Wave poster, Aiden focused on how the artist uses the environment to define cultural identity. The glowing blue waves from Matsu show an important part of Taiwanese natural and cultural heritage, and he felt the piece uses the landscape as a metaphor for how the environment can shape someone’s sense of belonging. Aiden appreciated how this artwork connects nature with personal identity.
He also pointed out how the AFSF project expands the conversation by referencing different cultural experiences outside the artist’s own. By acknowledging African American identities, the artist shows a willingness to explore new ideas and engage in cross-cultural dialogue. Aiden felt this made the overall theme richer and placed the artist’s personal story in a larger, more inclusive context.
However, Aiden did suggest one improvement: adding more short explanations next to the ring designs. He believed that including some text would help clarify the symbolism and make the pieces easier to understand for people who might not know the cultural references. This shows how important it is to combine visual design with writing to fully express the meaning behind the work.
From a design standpoint, Aiden also noticed a strong variety in scale across the projects, from small wearables to larger installations and public pieces. He thought this range not only showed technical skill but also reinforced the idea that identity exists on many different levels: personal, communal, and environmental. He also liked the poster layouts, saying the main images at the top made a strong first impression and the consistent structure helped keep everything clear and visually balanced.
Based on the four pieces shown, Aiden felt the ring designs were the most compelling. He thought they captured the artist’s exploration of cultural identity in the most direct and personal way. His final suggestion was for the artist to explain even more about how identity connects to the subject matter through text, which would strengthen the conceptual meaning and help viewers understand the work on a deeper level.
