Artist Statement

My sustained investigation follows the visualization of "psychosis", or making traditionally normal architecture feel almost uncanny and disturbing. This type of architecture perfectly fits liminal spaces, or a special internet aesthetic characterized by empty locations with a sense of nostalgia and surrealism. Liminal spaces were originally popularized around 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic due to how lockdown procedures forced people to abandon previously busy places like malls. Its vernacular definition follows its history; these spaces are often associated with busy, "transitional" places, as "liminal" emerged from the Latin word "limina", or threshold. The contrast between the transitional function of the space, where lengthened stay is not expected, and the static aesthetic generates unease and familiarity reminiscent of the disorientating emotions people with psychosis experience. Thus, my architecture seeks to explore the hidden, sometimes haunting, conditions seen in contemporary architecture and narratives.
