Artist Statement
For the personal narrative vessel, I combined the traditional form Yuhuchun vases and elements of Kathy Butterly's works. Both pieces reflect my connection to nature and my appreciation for its beauty, while also exploring how natural forms can be interpreted through clay.
For the first piece, my piece was inspired by how the form of Yuhuchun vases resemble a flower bud. I incorporated Kathy Butterly's style by adding flower petal textures on the form. Additionally, I used colors of red, pink, and yellow to convey the comforting, uplifting emotions I associate with watching flowers bloom. The organic curves and bright colors work together to express a sense of growth, warmth, and renewal.
For the second piece, I incorperated elements of Kathy Butterly's works by experimenting with warping/manipulating wet clay. This allowed the form to develop an expressive, asymettrical shape that highlights the beauty of imperfection found in nature. I added sculpted flowers to reinforce the theme of nature and used a textured brown-and-green surface to resemble tree bark. TThe purple glaze conveys the sense of mystery and awe I feel when observing nature.
