Artist Statement

Throughout this investigation, I wanted to explore self identity through another self portrait, expressing the balance I struggled to find between being true to myself and being able to adapt to the environment. In this artwork, the tennis racket stood as a symbol as well as a physical representation. It symbolises the true self though partially blocked by the racket, showing the part of me that mostly is hidden behind the surface. The physical representation being the sport that I could always feel relaxed and forget about what others thought when I played. Everytime I held the racket in my hands, the worries faded. Again, rounding back to the idea of identity and exploration.

In this artwork, I wanted to explore using a different techinque of cross-hatching. I wanted to investigate how this different type of stroke would change how the piece stood. Different from the smooth strokes I was used to making, this techinque although seemingly less smooth and perfect, made the depth perception even stronger.

How can close ups and different perspectives be used to vary the emotions, identity, and characteristics expressed through a drawing of a person?

In my investigation, I hope to explore self identity through self portraits that express different aspects of my life. By experimenting with various materials both color and black and white, I hope to express different emotions through contrasts of color, highlights, and shading. I hope to express a balance between realistic and expressive mark-making, to show how an artwork can express a deeper meaning of identity beneath what people see.
