Artist Statement
For this project, I chose to represent the dual conflicting forces of light and dark in one architectual structure.
On my light side, I created large openings in the walls, allowing me to represent light both in a literal sense as it allows light to pass through and in the way that the more open space it creates mirrors the freeflowing nature of light. Additionally, on one face of my light side I created diamond-shaped holes, representing light as well because of the brilliant nature of diamonds, and on another a shape resembling a sun, a very bright mass that emits large amounts of light, ultimately tying the specific shapes I created back to my theme as well. Additionally, within the light side I created a diamond shape coming from the ceiling, a shape generally associated with light, as well as a pedastal on the floor, an object generally associated with brilliance.
On my dark side, I created columns with planes above them, creating shapes similar to that of an umbrella. I have them at varying heights and sizes, allowing both for a large amount of shade but also shade that varies in size and shape as the sun moves across the sky, demonstrating a small seeping of light into even the dark side of my building, tying the two sides of my structure together even as they were inspired by opposite themes. I also created shapes in the corners of the dark side in order to create a more enclosed space, both creating a direct juxtapostion to the openess of the light side as well as demonstrating the suffocating, encompassing nature of darkness.
Ultimately, by using primarily a contrast in the use of space in either side of my structure as well as the use of symbolic shapes, my work seeks to demonstrate duality by contrasting the abstract concepts of darkness and light.
