Artist Statement
In this piece, I wanted to express how humans are trapped in the trend of materialism, represented by the divers trapped in a cloth-like water, blinded by this distraction, unaware of the reality around them. I chose to use complementary colors with muted intensity to cause the opposing effect that evokes the contradicting thoughts of human action. As I continued the exploration of complementary colors, I came across the concept of surrealism. In particular, I was greatly inspired by René Magritte’s painting, Golconda. His repetitive use of falling men inspired my artwork, I combined the idea of repetition in my piece with the divers to emphasize the loss of individuality and conformity. Furthermore, the octopus, symbolizing transformation and adaptability, represents awareness and the struggle to break free. Thus, I captured how people remain trapped in illusions of their own making, conforming without any questioning
