Artist Statement

The CH-53, better known as the Sea Stallion, is one of my favorite helicopters, having been featured in some of my childhood games like Blackhawk Rescue Mission 5, and was introduced during the Vietnam War as a troop transport, heavy cargo lifter, and medical helicopter. It also has an iconic role in being used by the US Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force, as well as foreign militaries, despite being overshadowed by the more famous Chinook and Blackhawk.

I therefore decided to model it for my final project, and I also thought that the unique shape of a helicopter would present a good challenge, being neither too easy or too hard. I am generally quite happy with how it turned out, and how I was able to get down the main feel of the helicopter without having to carve out tiny details. I felt that the most difficult part of the modelling process was making the engines, which I had kind of avoided sculpting throughout the course of the project, but became easier than I expected once I got to doing it. I made use of the boolean tool several times during modelling, in order to get unique shapes such as the divot in the propeller housing, the windows, and some of the engine components.
