Artist Statement
The assignment was to use charcoal to make a high constrast self portait drawing with the focus on value. We printed out some selfies in black and white and drew a grid on the photo. Then we drew a grid on the paper, but just scaled up. The grid was supposed to help with drawing what we saw and not with what we knew. I think it did help a lot, especially for the porportions. I used vine charcoal for outlining, since it's easy to erase and compressed charcoal for shading since you can blend it and it's darker. For the highlights, I used a conte crayon and a white colored pencil. The overall project was pretty hard but fun. I still don't like the big drawing, but it looks realistic from far away. :D
