Artist Statement

In this project, I decided to take 3 photos of my cello. I chose my cello to be the object of focus as it means a lot to me, since my grandpa and my parents awarded me this cello on my 14th birthday as a celebration of one of my best performances in my competition last year. It reminds me to work hard and stay diligent even when things get hard, in all ways not just regarding the cello, such as overcoming specific hard assignments, having tough situations and practicing hard music. For my first photo, I chose to use an apeture of F4.0 to capture a shallow depth of field to focus on the top of the cello (aka the scroll and pegs), emphasize on the different dimensions and keep the background soft, while I adjusted my ISO to be 80 and the shutter speed to be 1/3 accordingly to my preference on how bright I wanted the photo to look. For the middle photo, I decided to take a slower shutter speed by toning it down to 1/8, to make sure I was able to blue the motion of the C string of the cello, to show movement and liveliness in my photo, I also used an apeture of F4.5 to let in enough light to make sure that the string appeared sharp enough in the photo where the movement would be obvious. Lastly, I used ISO 400 to compensate the indoor light with the slow shutter speed. For the final 3rd photo, I focused on my apeture by decreasing it to F11 to do a deeper depth of field, and I was taking a photo of the bottom of the cello (aka the endpin and tailpiece) which didn't have much texture or dimension, so I wanted to focus on the whole portion of the cello rather than being specific with a increased apeture. For the ISO and shutter speed, I did a shutterspeed of 1/10s and ISO 800 which was both adjusted accordingly to how I wanted the photo to look, similar to photo 1.
