Artist Statement
For my narrative vessel, I combined the intent behind Michelle Erickson's work and the form of ancient Greek kylixes. Kylixes were traditionally used in elite social gatherings centered on drinking and I ironically depicted images of three wealthy figures with gold accessories in the bowl of the kylix, a space usually reserved for gods and heroes. My artwork illustrates the idea of "eat the rich", condemning the wealthy elite that dismiss the struggles of the poor. Using an ancient form to deliver a contemporary critique, this piece positions economic satire as a modern world concern on who benefits and how luxury is sustained.
