Andrea's feedback really helped me understand the full extent of my sustained investigation. Since my sustained investigation was about incorporating industrialization and technology with nature elements, I tried to highlight these ideas through various elements. With elements such as the metallic spray paint mimicking iron and wire, Andrea felt that the industrial concept was apparent. Additionally, through organic elements such as the butterflies or the flowers, natural concepts were also represented. Andrea felt that by spray painting the butterflies the same color as the rest of the project, it really emphasized the idea of the mutualism relationship between nature and industrialism or technology. However, Andrea felt that the natural elements were overshadowed by the silver and iron motifs. As such, this can be overcome or changed by coloring the butterflies a different color, like red in the very first piece I did. I agree with this critique, as it feels like my work is more critiquing industrialism rather than commenting on its relationship with nature.
Moreover, my works have improved and developed throughout the four pieces I showcased. Andrea noticed that my very first piece was molded with a glove, and therefore loose and more formless compared to my later works. My later works were molded with more precise materials, such as the wooden hand or the skull. This improved the precision and allowed the work to feel more exquisite and complete. This also makes the work more fashion inspired, as people can actually comfortably wear them without making it feel too loose or tight. I agree with this sentiment, as I feel that my works feel incomplete when examined up close. By making them fit the figure or form, it feels not only like a piece of art, but a piece of fashion as well. This can further complicate my sustained investigation by giving it an alternative perspective by incorporating fashion into the main idea.
With fashion as a contributor, the work not only involves interactions between industrialization or technology with nature, it also involves interactions between those aforementioned elements (technology, industrialization, nature) with humans and civilization. Doing so would provide a more nuanced understanding and perspective to my works, thus giving them a more profound meaning. As such, I can have not only a more nuanced main theme, but also broaden my perspective and the elements or ideas I visualize in my works. I can alter my sustained investigations to be based around how humans caused the destruction of nature via industrialization, or how humans can work together through unity and community to right the wrongs of industrialization. I hope to showcase that industrialization as a concept is not morally wrong or destructive, but it’s the mentality and the usage by humans behind it that causes the deterioration of nature, thus harming us in the process.
Throughout my 4 works, the patterns and motifs I used were pretty similar and limited. By varying them, I can better visualize the concepts I mentioned above, and make my worksmore cohesive and profound.
