Artist Statement
Receiving critique on my Sustained Investigation work was a valuable experience that helped me reflect deeply on both my process my intentions as an artist. Max noted that my exploration of architectural structure and the connection to phobia came through in the work, especially in how I explored different phobias. He suggested that I could further clarify the relationship between my concept and my visual decisions, making sure each piece clearly ties back to my artist statement. This made me think critically about the abstract forms I use might be interpreted by others and whether I am doing enough to guide the viewer's understanding through intentional choices in compositional and mateiral.
One of the key strengths identified in the feedback was my use of composition and scale, particularly my ability to skilfully shift between open and closed space. This shows that I'm beginning to master how to control visual tension and balance in architectural spaces, an important element in communicating psychological or emotional themes like fear or discomfort. It confirmed for me that my technical skill is growing, especially in creating abstract forms that feel structurally grounded but conceptually open.
I learned that my sketches can improve because Max said so. I also need to emphasize my artist statement to be more about phobias. Another important takeaway from the critique was the reminder to make my artist statement and visual work more connected. While my ideas were strong internally, they must be visible to someone unfamilar with my process. I plan to revisit my artist statement and refine it to be more precise, and I'll look at each piece to ensure that the design decisions I'm making, whether in form, material, or spatial layout, are intentional reflections of that statement.
In summary, the critique helped me understand how to better align my concept with my execution and how to evolve both my materials and process to strengthen communication. It reminded me that successful artworks isn't just about technical skill, but about how clearly and powerfully it speaks. As I continue with my Sustained Investigation, I plan to challenge myself to experiment more boldly and o make sure that every artistic decision I make is rooted in and reflective of my core concept.
