Artist Statement

My childhood winters were a cascade of joyful pursuits: the crisp crunch of footsteps on freshly fallen snow, the exhilaration of a snowball fight, and the swift thrill of sledding. Yet, my deepest affection was reserved for the sculpture of a snowman—rolling the perfect spheres, stacking them high, and breathing a temporary life into the figure. To leave my completed creation outside, knowing its ephemeral nature, always weighed heavy on my young heart. I remember, with a poignant clarity, carrying an umbrella out into a rain-laced storm, a futile but devoted gesture to shield my friend when the snow turned to rain.
I've come to view winter as the comma in the four seasons—a beautiful, necessary pause. It is a moment of quiet repose, a deliberate slowing of the busy seasonal current, allowing the earth to rest and gather its strength for the explosion of new life to come. I cherish this stillness.
My own perpetual 'comma' has always been my grandmother's house. She was, and remains, my unwavering advocate. She watched, a silent supporter, as I built the snowmen, as I sheltered them with an umbrella, and even as they eventually melted away. In everything I did, she offered an unconditional cheer. Her home is my constant haven, the place where I always find rest and renewal.
This entire emotional tapestry—the delicate balance between creation and loss, the seasonal reflection, and the profound comfort of home—is the essence I've sought to capture within this picture.
