Artist Statement
Introduction:
As we begin to insert more thought and creativity into the creation process of our pieces, I’d like to focus on function. I enjoy pieces that are beautiful and interesting as well as functional and useful. In terms of linear motifs, I find myself being drawn to geometric pieces, often with line designs. As my skill level increases, I hope to build upon this goal and continue to utilize linear motifs in my pieces.
Piece 1:
Title: Bottle; stopper
Artist/Culture: Unknown, Ming dynasty
Approximate Date: 1630-1640
Medium: Porcelain
Reflection: Similar to the other pieces I chose, I like the way the piece’s form aids its function. I’m inspired by the way the artist created a stopper/lid like piece to fit in the top of the bottle. I also think that the design, although very difficult for me to aim at recreating, is quite interesting and unique. I like the creativity of this piece.
Piece 2:
Title: Jug
Artist/Culture: Unknown, Staffordshire
Approximate date: ca.1730 -1750
Medium: Earthenware with Lead Glaze
Reflection: Similar to the “Loving Cup” piece, I was inspired to pick this piece because it is both interesting to look at and functional—being able to be used as a jug. I like the way the colors contrast and the way in which the artist played with color to add interesting aspects to the piece.
Piece 3:
Title: Loving Cup
Artist/Culture: Unknown, Nottingham
Approximate Date: 1740
Medium: Stoneware with salt glaze
Reflection: The composition, form, and function of this piece inspired me to choose it. I’m interested in creating pieces that are both interesting in composition and function for use. To me, this piece achieves the things that I’m looking forward to creating. I also enjoy the texture on the outside and the handles to the sides of the pot.
Piece 4:
Title: Vase with cover (part of a garniture)
Artist/Culture: De Metaale Pot Factory, Dutch, Delft
Approximate date: ca. 1690
Medium: Tin-glazed earthenware
Reflection: I chose this piece because it inspired me to make a set of different pieces with a common glaze, design, color tying them together. Although I’m not very inspired by the design, I like the idea and hope to be able to incorporate it in my pieces.
Conclusion:
Although these pieces aren't all alike, they are all functional pieces. This is something I'd like to use as inspiration in my future pieces. Additionally, some of the pieces include handles and lids. This is something I'm quite interested in experimenting with. I think handles and lids can add personality and uniqueness to pieces and can aid that functionality aspect that I'm seeking. Hopefully I can successfully incorporate ideas from these pieces in order to create my own interesting and unique piece.
