Artist Statement
How can variations of value, texture, and contrasts in pencil and charcoal be used to explore realism, abstraction, and close ups when drawing people and objects?
How can close ups and different perspectives be used to vary the emotions, identity, and characteristics expressed through a drawing of a person?
In this investigation, I will use primarily pencil and charcoal to explore how value, close ups and varying perspectives can change the way we see both people and objects. By experimenting with contracts, textures, and different surfaces, I hope to find out how black and white drawings can express ideas, emotions, and identity. I will also incorporate colored materials in special areas to try to highlight and shift the message that can be conveyed through the artwork. I hope to express a balance between realistic and expressive mark-making, to show how a graphite and charcoal drawing could be used to express deeper feelings especially in people.
