Artist Statement

1. Identify the inquiry that guided your sustained investigation. (Max. 600 characters and spaces)

Beneath the waves, vibrant corals are seen, each with its unique structure. Different corals have specific functions that enable them to work with other corals to create a mutually dependent thriving environment under the sea. I wanted to explore how I could create spaces that mimic these qualities, which would promote the sustainability of their surrounding environments at the same time. This led to my sustained investigation question of how the forms, structures, and functions of corals can inspire architectural designs that emphasize sustainability, and functionality.

2. Describe ways your sustained investigation developed through practice, experimentation, and revision. (Max. 600 characters and spaces)

I began by researching corals to integrate into architectural buildings to create visually interesting spaces. However, as I progressed, my focus shifted to how corals were able to adapt and survive in the harsh conditions of the ocean. I focused on the functions of corals, highlighting each of their contributions to the sea. This led me to think about how their functions would be able to mitigate environmental issues on land. I connected the unique functions and/or threats of corals and integrated them into my design to help with the sustainability of the building’s surrounding environment.
