Artist Statement
I created this design for the AFSF UN Plaza. The UN plaza seems to be facing an economic decline and encounters many drug dealers. Therefore, I designed a river in the middle of the plaza, along with some trees, benches, swings, and trashcans on the side. Not only does this design combine the Plaza with nature, it also acts as a resting area for families, and a potential attraction for children. Families can be entertained in boat activities, and seasonal events can also occur on the river. When this area becomes more populated, the markets and stores alongside this Plaza can earn more income, and with more families and children around, fewer drug dealers will be attracted to this area. Also, the combination of the Plaza with nature is a good example of utilizing the sunshine this area in San Fransisco receives, especially in Springtime and Summertime. Since the weather in San Fransisco is also quite windy, the trees and bridges can reduce individuals' exposure to strong winds, providing not only a shady resting area and place for entertainment but also protection from harsher climates. Overall, this design could not only act as a nice resting area for individuals in the Plaza but also solve issues that the UN Plaza area is currently encountering.
