Artist Statement
In this painting, I wanted to, as the title suggests, paint something that means a lot to me. For my reference, I chose my 4th grade project where I had to turn a shoebox into a setting- I picked the ocean (specifically, the Great Barrier Reef). I had to research the creatures there and I remember the sea urchin well. It's scientific name is 'Heliocidaris eryhthrogramma', and since it stuck with me, I named the painting that.
Though I had to omit the animals (for lack of time and space), I like how this painting turned out despite not liking it in the beginning. It looks a lot better with the space filled I think.
I struggled with the transitions from each coral color to the next and to be honest I'm still not happy with that. However, I like my design for the coral (I tried to do multiple types in my study and in my final) and I'm proud of how it came out.
